The Toronto Maple Leafs have added depth on defence by signing Nick Blankenburg to a oneyear contract. The team announced the deal on Sunday but did not disclose the financial terms. Blankenburg had been with the Leafs at training camp on a professional tryout agreement before earning the contract. The 28yearold from Washington, Michigan split last season between the Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche, finishing with a careerhigh eight goals and 16 assists in 61 games. He originally joined the NHL as an undrafted free agent with Columbus in 2022 and spent three seasons with the Blue Jackets before moving to Nashville in 2024. Toronto opens its regular season on Tuesday at home against the Montreal Canadiens.
