Xi plans rare foreign trips ahead of expected Trump summit
Xi Jinping overseas travel: see his rare diplomatic tour and key talks ahead Follow the Kyrgyzstan, Egypt and India stops as Beijing eyes U.S. tensions
Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing for a rare stretch of overseas travel, with visits to Kyrgyzstan, Egypt and possibly India before an expected trip to the United States later in September. The schedule comes as Beijing faces trade tensions with Washington, wider security concerns and growing debate over artificial intelligence policy.
Xi arrived in Bishkek for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, where leaders from Russia, India and other nonWestern countries are gathering. He is also expected to make his first state visit to Egypt in about a decade, reflecting China’s expanding ties in the Middle East and along the Suez Canal region.
China has not confirmed whether Xi will attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, which would be his first visit to India since 2019. The trip would come after a period of cautious improvement in ChinaIndia ties, even as major disputes over borders, trade and technology remain unresolved. Analysts say Washington is watching the meetings closely as it weighs its own approach to China, India and Russia.
