Ghana’s government has condemned Canada’s decision to deny a visa to midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of Ghana’s World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto. The government said it considers the move unfair and said it may pursue legal and diplomatic options to challenge it.
Partey returned to Ghana’s team base in Rhode Island after the refusal. He faces rape and sexual assault charges in the U.K. and has pleaded not guilty. His trial is expected later this year in London.
Ghana’s foreign ministry said it had filed a protest and is in talks with Canadian officials. Partey is expected to be available for Ghana’s later group matches against England and Croatia.
