Quebec psychiatrists are asking the province’s next government to appoint a minister specifically responsible for mental health.
At a press conference in Montreal, held at the Mission Old Brewery homeless resource centre, association president Claire Gamache said such a role could help coordinate mental health policy across government and keep the issue on the agenda after the election.
Gamache also outlined six proposed measures, including more options instead of hospitalization, stronger support for healthcare workers, and broader access to telemedicine for mental health care. She said demand for services is rising, while access remains limited, and cited a rise in hospitalizations for suicidal thoughts among girls aged 10 to 14 between 2010 and 2023.
