Zelenskyy to press for security support in UN speech as peace talks advance
Zelenskyy UN speech on Ukraine war, peace talks, and security guarantees See what Kyiv seeks on air defense, energy protection, and Black Sea exports
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday as diplomatic efforts intensify around Russia’s war in Ukraine. His speech follows a meeting with President Donald Trump, who said he believes a peace deal could be reached soon, though he did not describe the terms.
Zelenskyy is expected to present what his government calls concrete security proposals and deescalation steps. Kyiv is also seeking more air defense systems, help protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and support for keeping Black Sea food exports moving as winter approaches and Russian attacks continue to threaten power supplies.
The discussion comes as both sides appear to be considering limits on strikes against energy targets. Trump has urged Ukraine to stop hitting Russian oil refineries and has said the United States could consider new tariff measures against buyers of Russian energy to increase pressure for an end to the war. Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has said any agreement would need security guarantees and matching steps from Russia to be durable.
