Ottawa to spend nearly $2 billion on 190 armoured vehicles

Canada will spend almost $2 billion over four years to buy 190 armoured combat support vehicles from General Dynamics Land SystemsCanada, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in London, Ont. The vehicles will be assembled at the company’s facility in the city and will expand the Canadian fleet to 550. Carney said the deal is part of the federal government’s defence industrial strategy, which is intended to strengthen domestic manufacturing while supplying the armed forces with equipment. He said the partnership is expected to support more than 6,000 jobs annually over the next eight years across a national supply chain. The contract involves work from several Canadian firms, including companies in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia, which will supply components for the vehicles. The government said the investment is meant to support military readiness, domestic industry and Canada’s broader defence procurement plans.
