Cambridge councillors respond to mayor’s interruption at Pride event

Several Cambridge, Ont., councillors have criticized Mayor Jan Liggett after she interrupted a 17yearold’s speech at a Pride event on June 1. Coun. Sheri Roberts, Corey Kimpson and Scott Hamilton said the incident was troubling and emphasized that young people and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community deserve to be heard and treated with respect. Liggett has defended her decision in a video response, saying she acted to refocus the event and that the teen’s remarks about another councillor were added after the speech had been reviewed by city staff. The teen, Sophie Mills, said the speech had not been vetted by the city. The dispute has drawn broader attention to how the city handles inclusion, public remarks and the role of youth voices at community events.
