Hanwha Ocean withdraws from Hamilton partnership after losing submarine bid

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean is ending its partnership with Mohawk College and Ontario Shipyards in Hamilton after Canada selected Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems for the navy’s submarine replacement program. The partnership, announced in February, was tied to Hanwha’s bid for the federal submarine contract and included plans for a training hub and a vessel for naval training and recruitment. Hanwha said the agreement depended on being chosen for the project, while the remaining partners said they will continue without the company. Ontario Shipyards and Mohawk College say their separate agreement remains in place, and the training vessel project will still move ahead. The news follows Ottawa’s decision to negotiate with TKMS for up to 12 submarines, a deal described by the federal government as one of the largest in Canadian history.
