ChatGPT Work adds agentic features for tasks across apps and devices

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new agent inside ChatGPT designed to help users handle larger, multistep projects across web, mobile, and desktop. The company says the tool can gather information from connected apps and workflows, then create finished outputs such as documents, spreadsheets, slides, and web apps. The feature is powered by GPT5.6 and includes Codex technology, which OpenAI says now supports work beyond software development. ChatGPT Work can break tasks into smaller steps, continue working over long periods, and use scheduled tasks to monitor changes or update materials automatically. On desktop, the new ChatGPT app adds a builtin browser and can work with local files and apps. OpenAI is also merging the Codex app into the desktop app, while keeping codingfocused features available for developers and technical users. ChatGPT Work is starting to roll out today for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users on web and mobile, with Plus and Business access arriving in the next few days. The updated desktop app is available globally on Mac and Windows, including for free users.
