Man who killed Ontario restaurant owner apologizes after guilty plea

A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Owen Sound restaurant owner Sharif Rahman apologized in court to the victim’s family and the community on Friday. Robert Evans Jr. admitted his role in the Aug. 2023 assault outside The Curry House, where Rahman was struck during a dispute over an unpaid bill and died a week later from his injuries. Evans’s father, Robert Busby Evans, and uncle, Barry Evans, also pleaded guilty to being accessories after the fact. A judge is considering a joint sentencing recommendation that calls for a 42month sentence for Evans Jr. and 21 months each for the two older men. The court has already sentenced the father and uncle to terms that match the time they have already served, and both are expected to face deportation. Evans Jr.’s sentencing is scheduled for July 10.
