Lower Don Trail section in Toronto set to reopen Aug. 1

A section of Toronto’s Lower Don Trail between Belleville Underpass and Queen Street East is scheduled to reopen on Aug. 1, after being closed since 2023 for major upgrades. The reopening will restore a key link for pedestrians and cyclists in the Don Valley, although some work will continue later this year. The city says the project includes trail regrading, widening, paving, new markings, fencing, and accessibility improvements such as handrails and bicycle troughs. It also addresses erosion and drainage problems, and a new staircase to Dundas Street Bridge is part of the work. City officials say about 6.3 kilometres of the trail is already open, with roughly 1.3 kilometres still to be completed by August. Another temporary closure is expected in the fall to finish a sloped accessible connection from the Riverdale Pedestrian Bridge, while full completion of the Lower Don River Trail is now expected next year.
