RCMP recover nearly 400 vehicles in anti-fraud pilot

The RCMP says it has recovered nearly 400 vehicles from Canadian ports during the first year of a pilot project aimed at stopping fraudulently obtained cars from being exported. The program, called Project NoCargo, focuses on transnational criminal networks that use fake or stolen identities to buy vehicles and arrange insurance policies as part of a fraud scheme. Police said the effort is meant to help identify and disrupt those organizations. Since launching in June 2025, the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency say they have recovered 392 vehicles worth an estimated $28 million in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Officials also said vehicle finance fraud helped drive about $900 million in insurance losses last year, and that the pilot has involved cooperation with Interpol Ottawa, Fintrac and Canadian financial institutions.
