Quebec says it wants 77% of the energy used in the province to come from renewable sources by 2050, up from 48% today.
Energy Minister Bernard Drainville announced the province's 25year resource management plan in Varennes, northeast of Montreal, and called the target ambitious. Under the plan, the share of energy from fossil fuels would fall to 23% from 52%.
Officials said reaching the goal would require about C$87 billion in investment for projects such as upgrades to hydroelectric plants and new wind, solar, and bioenergy capacity. Some of that amount overlaps with HydroQuébec's separate C$200 billion plan to expand capacity and improve reliability by 2035.
