Port of Vancouver expansion referred to federal projects office
Port of Vancouver expansion could boost trade, jobs and cargo capacity fast. Major Projects Office review may speed approval for Canada’s gateway to Asia.
The Port of Vancouver expansion has been referred to Canada’s federal Major Projects Office, a move aimed at speeding up approval for large infrastructure projects deemed important to the national interest.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the referral in Delta, B.C., saying the project is intended to strengthen trade links, support jobs and improve the movement of goods through Canada’s main gateway to Asia and the IndoPacific region.
According to MacKinnon, the port handled a record 170 million metric tons of cargo in 2025 and supports about onethird of Canada’s nonU.S. trade. The planned expansion includes a threeberth container terminal that would add nearly 2.4 million containers of annual capacity, with officials saying it could help Canada expand exports to nonU.S. markets by 2035.
