Carney on Iran talks: Canada backs Strait of Hormuz progress at G7 summit See how leaders aim to ease Middle East tensions, secure shipping and boost stability
Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in France on Monday for the G7 summit and said Canada welcomes reported progress in talks between Iran and the United States.
Carney said Canada is prepared to help restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz if the reported agreement is finalized and implemented. He said the Middle East conflict highlights the need for more resilient commodity and shipping systems, an issue he expects to discuss with other leaders at the summit.
In a joint statement, Carney and the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom said they support efforts to reopen the strait, reduce regional instability and work toward a longerterm diplomatic settlement. The summit is also expected to cover the war in Ukraine, AI regulation and online safety for children.
