Calls grow for Highway 1 safety upgrades near Revelstoke

Highway 1 safety concerns grow near Revelstoke as crashes spark urgent calls for upgrades Province faces pressure to boost enforcement and fix the dangerous Revelstoke-Sicamous stretch

Residents and local leaders in the Revelstoke, B.C., area are urging the province to improve Highway 1 after a series of serious crashes and road closures on the stretch between Revelstoke and Sicamous. Drive B.C. reported four collisions on the highway between Aug. 29 and Sept. 1, and officials said three people died while six others were sent to hospital. The incidents have renewed concerns about the narrow, winding section of road and the impact it has on people who depend on it for travel and medical appointments. Local MLA Scott McInnis and MP Mel Arnold have asked the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit to increase enforcement and consider longerterm design changes. The ministry said it is already investing in Highway 1 upgrades elsewhere in the corridor and pointed to existing safety measures, but did not say whether the RevelstokeSicamous stretch will be included in future work.
