Satellite images show new defenses at Iran nuclear-linked site
Iran satellite imagery shows new defenses at Pickaxe Mountain tunnel entrances See why analysts think the buried site and Parchin rebuild remain a flashpoint
New satellite imagery suggests Iran has added defenses around tunnel entrances at Pickaxe Mountain, a deeply buried site near the Natanz nuclear complex, according to a report released Thursday by the Institute for Science and International Security.
The report said images from Sept. 11 show roadblocks and added soil around western tunnel portals, which may make the entrances harder to attack from the air. Analysts said the site appears to remain restricted and is likely not in normal use, although equipment or materials may still be inside.
The findings came after President Donald Trump renewed threats against the site and as Russia and China vetoed a U.S. Security Council resolution that would have extended the mandate of the U.N. panel monitoring Iran sanctions. The same report also said Iran is rebuilding the Taleghan 2 facility at the Parchin military complex, where satellite images showed construction equipment and cover structures over the damaged site.
