President Donald Trump said Friday that he will not sign a bipartisan housing bill because the Senate has not advanced the SAVE America Act, a voting measure he wants passed first.
The housing legislation, known as the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, is designed to reduce home construction costs and encourage more building. Unless Trump vetoes it, the bill is scheduled to become law on Saturday under the constitutional 10day review period.
Trump has argued that photo voter ID and proof of citizenship should be required to prevent election fraud, and he has urged Republicans to make the SAVE Act a priority before the November midterm elections. Democrats criticized his stance, saying he is holding up housing relief at a time when affordability remains a major concern.
