Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital gains university hospital status

Quebec has officially designated Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital as a university hospital, recognizing its longstanding role in medical research, teaching and specialized care. Health Minister Sonia Bélanger said the move acknowledges nearly a century of service and excellence. The status also makes the hospital eligible for research and teaching grants it could not previously access, although provincial officials said the change will not add costs for the government. Hospital leaders said the designation largely formalizes work the institution has already been doing for years. Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg said the upgrade is unlikely to alter daily operations much, but it does give staff formal recognition for their work.
