Two women were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and several seniors were displaced after an early morning fire in a North York apartment building on Thursday, Toronto Fire said.
Emergency crews were called to the building near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East around 1:48 a.m. Firefighters found heavy smoke and high heat on the ninth floor hallway and brought the blaze under control within minutes after getting water access.
Toronto Fire said the fire caused major smoke damage, and about 18 units on the south side of the ninth floor will likely be out of service for about a week because of smoke and water damage. Some residents were moved to shelter buses and other temporary housing while investigators work to determine the fire’s cause.
