Canada’s population grew slightly in 2025 after StatsCan revision

Canada population growth rebounded in 2025, rising 280,810 after revised data See how weaker growth and lower immigration targets could shape Canada’s outlook

Statistics Canada says Canada’s population increased by 280,810 people in 2025 after revising an earlier estimate that had shown a decline. The agency said the original March figures were preliminary and could change as more complete administrative data became available. The updated numbers suggest growth was still relatively weak compared with recent years. The revision comes as the federal government has been reducing both temporary and permanent immigration targets after a postpandemic period of rapid population growth. According to the latest federal plans, Canada would admit 385,000 temporary residents in 2026, followed by 370,000 in 2027 and 2028. The government also plans to limit annual permanent resident admissions to 380,000 over the same period.
