New Westminster fire displaces residents after apartment building blaze Emergency crews, updates and support details from the scene
Dozens of residents in New Westminster, B.C., were forced out of their homes after a large fire gutted a threestorey apartment building on Friday.
Fire crews were still working at the site on Saturday morning, more than 18 hours after the blaze was reported at 905 Fourth Avenue around 1:30 p.m. PT. New Westminster firefighters called in assistance from Burnaby as the fire spread. City officials said one building with about 42 units was lost, and an adjacent building with roughly 30 units was evacuated as a precaution.
Three people were taken to hospital, but officials said everyone had been accounted for and the injuries appeared to be minor. Displaced residents are being sent to Century House in Moody Park for emergency support, including food, shelter and clothing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
