German officials warn of rising antisemitic attacks

Antisemitic incidents in Germany are rising as hate tied to the Gaza war spreads. See how Hesse officials link rhetoric to abuse, threats and growing fear.

German officials say antisemitic incidents are increasing, with authorities in Hesse linking part of the rise to Islamist and farleft rhetoric. A new regional report says language tied to the IsraelHamas war is being used to spread hostility toward Jews and, in some cases, justify violence. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck said the trend is worsening social cohesion and expressed shame over the abuse Jewish people continue to face in Germany 80 years after World War II. He said antisemitic attitudes are becoming harder to ignore in public life. The Central Council of Jews in Germany said many communities reported incidents such as verbal abuse, threats, vandalism and graffiti. The group also said many Jewish residents feel less safe since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, and that concerns have remained high even after a recent Gaza ceasefire.
