Fréchette to meet with Newfoundland and Labrador premier on Churchill Falls deal
Churchill Falls deal talks continue as Quebec and Newfoundland revisit energy terms Fréchette and Wakeham meet in P.E.I. on Tuesday, with an election deadline looming
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette is set to meet Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham in Prince Edward Island on Tuesday as talks continue over the Churchill Falls hydroelectric agreement.
The two governments are trying to revise a preliminary deal reached in 2024 by the previous premiers, François Legault and Andrew Furey. That draft would have given Newfoundland and Labrador more revenue from the Churchill River power project while helping Quebec secure longterm energy supply.
Wakeham's government later received an independent review that said the proposed agreement was not in Newfoundland and Labrador's best interest. Fréchette, however, said she still believes a mutually beneficial deal is possible and noted that negotiators have made progress in recent weeks. She also said the timeline is becoming more important with a Quebec election approaching, while Wakeham has said his government is not working under a fixed deadline.
