Toronto condo residents face heat without air conditioning

Residents of a condominium tower near Jarvis Street and Dundas Street East in Toronto say they have been without air conditioning for about a month after the building’s cooling system failed. The outage comes just as the city is experiencing its first major heat wave of the season, with temperatures expected to climb into the mid30s. People living in units on floors two to 30 say indoor temperatures have been rising into the 30s, making daily life difficult and raising concerns about the coming hot weather. Several residents said they have not received a clear repair timeline or regular updates from the property manager. City staff say they are investigating the building after receiving multiple complaints since June 7. Under Toronto rules, rental buildings that provide air conditioning must keep it running during the summer months, while shared amenity spaces in covered rental buildings must stay below 26 C. A condo law expert said residents should be kept informed during the outage, but noted that legal options may be limited if the building is actively trying to fix the problem.
