The federal government says it will direct the CRTC to revisit its recent decision to increase the amount streaming services must contribute to Canadian content. Ottawa argues the change could lead to higher prices for Canadians. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the government does not want to raise costs for consumers at a time when affordability remains a concern. Heritage officials added that the policy still aims to support Canada’s audio and audiovisual sectors, including through $600 million in government funding. The Online Streaming Act allows the CRTC to require large streaming platforms to contribute to Canadian content. The regulator had raised the base contribution from 5 per cent to 15 per cent last month. The CRTC said it will review any new policy direction from cabinet as it is issued.
