French authorities are investigating a deadly plane crash in northeastern France that killed the pilot and 10 parachutists on Sunday. The singleengine aircraft went down shortly after departing NancyEssey Airport, according to local officials.
The victims included five skydiving instructors, five novice jumpers preparing for tandem dives, and the pilot. Officials said the plane suffered a malfunction shortly after takeoff and crashed just beyond the runway area, narrowly avoiding a nearby residential neighborhood.
French transport and interior officials visited the scene and said a formal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Emergency and psychological support teams were also deployed for witnesses and relatives, including family members who were at the airport when the crash occurred.
