Quebec health minister to table bill targeting energy drinks for teens

Québec energy drink limits may tighten as lawmakers move to protect teens See why the proposed rules could change sales, schools and youth health soon

Quebec’s health minister plans to introduce legislation aimed at limiting the sale of energy drinks to teenagers, following renewed concern about their health effects. The debate intensified after the 2024 death of 15yearold Zachary Miron, whose coroner’s report said caffeine from a Red Bull combined with ADHD medication likely triggered an arrhythmia that led to his sudden death. Support for tougher rules has come from several opposition parties, parents, teachers, schools, public health groups and some junior sports organizations. A provincial Conservative member, Maïté Blanchette Vézina, said she wants more time to debate the proposal, which could delay fasttracking the bill before the legislature recesses and ahead of an election expected this fall.
