Canada asks for CUSMA renewal ahead of July review

Canada has formally notified the United States and Mexico that it wants the CanadaU.S.Mexico Agreement, known as CUSMA, renewed when it comes up for review on July 1. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc sent the request as he travelled to Washington for talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Ottawa is pressing for relief from U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, while the Trump administration has signalled it wants changes to the deal rather than a simple extension. The agreement covers about $1.3 trillion in annual CanadaU.S. trade and continues to shield many Canadian exports from tariffs. Under its terms, the three countries must say by July 1 whether they want to renew or renegotiate it, although the deal remains in force until 2036 unless a country withdraws with six months' notice.
