Trump renews push for U.S. control of Greenland as Denmark responds
Greenland control debate heats up as Trump cites Arctic security stakes See how Denmark, NATO, and U.S. allies are responding to the standoff
President Donald Trump repeated his call for the United States to control Greenland, saying the Arctic island is important for global security. He made the comments on Wednesday while speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a summit in Ankara, Turkey.
Trump said Greenland should be under U.S. control, not Denmark’s, and linked the issue to broader concerns about Russia and China in the Arctic. He also suggested that the U.S. could reconsider its military presence in Europe if allies continue to resist his position.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland is not for sale and stressed that Denmark will defend its territory and uphold NATO commitments. She also urged allies to respect Greenland’s right to selfdetermination. Rutte said NATO must work together to prevent Russia and China from gaining access to the Arctic, while keeping a process in place with Denmark and Greenland.
