Italy investigates government email breach linked to Revolut leak
Revolut data breach probe: Italy investigates a hacked certified email account Authorities say systems stayed safe—see what happened and what it means
Italian authorities are investigating a cyber incident in which a compromised governmentcertified email account may have been used to obtain Revolut customer data. The case is being examined by Italy’s Polizia Postale for alleged unauthorized access and computer fraud.
According to reports, some media outlets identified the affected account as belonging to the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, though the agency later denied sending any request to Revolut. The company said it alerted Italian authorities after detecting the issue and said its systems, databases, and customer funds were not affected.
The compromised account was reportedly part of Italy’s PEC certified email system, which gives messages legal standing similar to registered mail. Italy’s cyber agency said it has handled more than 650 cases involving abused or illicit PEC accounts since the start of 2026.
