Meet the TTC operator behind the cheerful subway announcements

A Toronto Transit Commission subway operator known as Alex Crawford, or "Uncle Crawfy," has become a small commuter favorite on Line 2 for upbeat announcements made over his train’s public address system. Instead of only delivering the usual warnings about delays or service problems, Crawford uses his shifts to share jokes, weather updates, Toronto trivia, restaurant tips, and even homemade haikus. He says the idea began as a way to keep himself engaged during long underground runs, and it has since grown into a regular part of his routine. Riders have shared clips of his announcements on social media, and some commuters say the messages make the daily trip feel more welcoming. Crawford, who has worked at the TTC for more than 11 years, says he still prioritizes safe and efficient service, but hopes his comments add a little positivity to the commute.
