Dyslexia centre set to open in Vancouver as advocates call for more school support
Dyslexia support in Vancouver faces gaps as a new centre opens next fall See how families, teachers and advocates are pushing for stronger school-based help
A new Centre for Dyslexia is scheduled to open in Vancouver next fall, but education advocates say families should not have to rely on a separate facility to get help.
The centre will offer screening, support for students and parents, and training for teachers. Supporters say it could help fill gaps, while critics argue that schools should provide these services directly inside the public system.
Cathy McMillan, founder of Dyslexia B.C., said her children needed expensive help outside school, while UBC education experts said many teachers are not taught enough about dyslexia or how to address it. The B.C. government said it has expanded early literacy screening and teacher learning, and is working with education partners on further supports.
