Sentencing hearing held for couple convicted in filmmaker's killing

Toronto courtroom sentencing hearing details the Liberty Village killing of filmmaker Reeyaz Habib Victim impact statements, verdicts and the Crown's prison terms ahead of Oct. 26 sentencing

A Toronto courtroom heard victim impact statements on Wednesday in the sentencing hearing for Khoa Tran and Quynh (Isabelle) Nguyen, a Liberty Village couple convicted in the death of filmmaker Reeyaz Habib. Habib, 53, was found dead in a garbage compactor in the condominium complex where he lived in June 2023. Prosecutors said the killing followed a dispute over barbecue smoke between Habib and Tran, who lived below him in the same townhouse complex. Tran was convicted of seconddegree murder, while Nguyen was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and of committing an indignity to a body. The Crown is seeking 18 years of parole ineligibility for Tran and a prison term of four to six years for Nguyen. The judge is scheduled to sentence the pair on Oct. 26.
