Canada imposes 10% tariff on canned vegetables from some countries
Canada canned vegetable tariff supports domestic processors amid import review See how the 10% duty may affect prices, exemptions, and what happens next
Canada has imposed a 10% tariff on imports of canned vegetables from most countries, while exempting the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile and developing countries. The measure took effect immediately on Friday and can remain in place for up to 200 days.
The Finance Ministry said the temporary tariff is meant to support domestic processors while the Canadian International Trade Tribunal reviews whether rising imports are hurting the industry. The tribunal is expected to finish its inquiry by Sept. 9.
Officials said the review will also consider food affordability and security for Canadian households. If the tribunal decides imports are not causing harm, the tariff will be lifted.
