SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said OpenAI’s next model is being designed by another AI system, a development he described as a sign that the technology is moving toward superintelligence.
In comments to CNBC, Son said OpenAI engineers told him that an AI model is helping design a future model. He said that once systems can build better successors on their own, the pace of improvement could accelerate beyond human capability.
Son also said his earlier estimate that artificial superintelligence could arrive within 10 years was too cautious, and that he now expects it sooner. His remarks come as Anthropic has warned that AI progress may need to be slowed to reduce safety risks and governance challenges.
