Mirabel residents push for safety changes after fatal Route 148 crash

Residents in Mirabel, Que., are pressing for safety improvements on Route 148 after another deadly collision on Monday left two people dead. The crash took place near StVincent, on a stretch of road that has now seen four deaths in the past three months. A petition started by local resident Sylvie Lefebvre in June has gathered more than 2,300 signatures. She is calling for measures such as stop signs at key intersections, saying drivers need more time to turn safely onto Route 148. The Quebec government has announced that the speed limit on part of Route 148 east and west of Montée Villeneuve will drop from 80 km/h to 70 km/h in the coming days. Officials also said the intersections with Rang SaintVincent, Montée Villeneuve and Rang SaintÉtienne are being redesigned, though no timeline has been set for completion. Mirabel Mayor Roxanne Therrien said the city has been asking for lower speeds and stronger safety measures for years. In the meantime, authorities say they will increase police presence and public awareness while longerterm options are studied.
