The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Daniel Alfredsson as an associate coach, bringing the former Ottawa Senators captain onto Jim Hiller’s staff ahead of the new NHL season.
The team also announced that John Gruden and Brad Werenka will join as assistant coaches, while Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde will not return.
Alfredsson spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach in Ottawa after a long playing career that made him a major figure in the Battle of Ontario rivalry. He played 1,246 regularseason NHL games with Ottawa and Detroit, finishing with 1,157 points and six allstar selections. Gruden and Werenka both bring coaching and playing experience to Toronto’s bench.
