A magnitude 2.8 earthquake was felt near Quebec City on Sunday evening, according to Earthquakes Canada. The tremor was recorded about 12 kilometres westsouthwest of the provincial capital, and no damage has been reported.
More than 2,000 people said they felt the ground shake around 8:30 p.m. Residents in places including Beauport, Wendake, PontRouge and Shannon shared their experiences on social media.
Earthquakes Canada says most quakes below magnitude 3.5 are rarely felt, while major earthquakes are magnitude 7 or higher. The agency also notes that about 450 earthquakes occur each year in eastern Canada, with an average of 30 above magnitude 3.
