Brampton to search bags at Canada Day event to stop illegal fireworks

Brampton officials will check bags at a Canada Day celebration in Chinguacousy Park to prevent attendees from bringing in illegal fireworks. Police and bylaw officers will manage controlled entrances and exits, and residents will still be allowed to bring food, water and drinks, but not alcohol or fireworks. Peel Regional Police Staff Supt. Hubert Hiltz said the city wants to reduce safety risks and avoid incidents like those seen during Victoria Day weekend, when police said large crowds and fireworks led to arrests and the park being closed early. He said anyone using fireworks in a harmful way could face arrest and criminal charges. Brampton banned personal fireworks in 2022 after a rise in complaints, and the city says the rule is meant to lower the risk of fires, injury, property damage, noise and pollution. Sparklers remain permitted.
