Lack of office space delays four-day return for some federal workers
Federal office space shortage is keeping 34,000 workers off a 4-day schedule See how departments plan to cut the gap and when space could open up
About 10% of unionized federal public servants, or roughly 34,000 employees, are still unable to work in the office four days a week because there is not enough space, according to Public Services and Procurement Canada.
The federal government began requiring most employees to be in the office four days a week in July, after previously setting a threeday requirement. Executives have been required to attend five days a week since May.
PSPC says it is working with departments to make more space available and expects the share of affected workers to fall to 5% by March 2027. Some departments, including Statistics Canada, Global Affairs Canada, and IRCC, said their timelines differ depending on location and available office space.
