B.C. unveils new border signs rejecting 51st state rhetoric

B.C. border signs make a bold statement against 51st state claims. See what they say, plus local rules, safety tips, and buy-local support.

B.C. Premier David Eby has introduced new border signs that will be placed at crossings with Washington state, including messages saying British Columbia will never be the 51st state. The signs were revealed at a Tuesday press conference. One version welcomes visitors with the line, “Strong, proud and will NEVER be the 51st state. Sorry!” Another includes reminders about local rules and safety, such as speed limits, fire bans, littering, and wildlife caution. The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump revived the “51st state” language in comments about trade talks and tariffs between Canada and the United States. Eby said the province is also encouraging people to buy local as countertariffs on nearly $28 billion in U.S. goods take effect and the trade dispute continues.
