Carney made the remarks in Montreal while announcing federal infrastructure investments in Quebec. His comments came after U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra reposted Trump's Truth Social message, which repeated the 51st state claim in response to a report about Canada's economy.
The exchange came as CanadaU.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc was in Washington for talks aimed at renewing the CanadaU.S.Mexico Agreement, which is due for review on July 1. LeBlanc said discussions with U.S. officials were positive and said he remained hopeful about reaching a renewed trade deal.
