Nanaimo park expansion will replace indoor tennis facility
Nanaimo expands Westwood Lake Park with new trail access and beach space City purchase could improve public access while future indoor tennis options are explored
Nanaimo is set to expand Westwood Lake Park by acquiring more than 1 hectare of nearby land, adding trail access and more public space. The city says the $2.88 million purchase will help extend the park’s trail network and improve beach access.
The land is currently home to the Westwood Lake Tennis Club, which will close on Nov. 1. The indoor courts are expected to be removed after the city takes ownership in December, leaving local players without an indoor facility in the short term.
Some club members are urging the city to delay the closure, while city officials say they only bought the land, not the business, and do not have a mandate to run the club. Nanaimo says it is working with Tennis B.C. and Tennis Canada on possible future indoor tennis options, including at Beban Park.
