OpenAI introduces Trusted Contact in ChatGPT

ChatGPT Trusted Contact adds a safety backstop for adults in crisis Choose a trusted person for alerts and get support when it matters most

OpenAI has begun rolling out Trusted Contact, an optional safety feature in ChatGPT for adults. The feature lets users choose someone they trust, such as a friend, family member, or caregiver, who may be notified if the system detects signs of a serious selfharm concern. The company says Trusted Contact is meant to add another layer of support alongside existing crisis helpline guidance in ChatGPT. Users can add one adult contact in settings, and that person must accept the invitation before the feature becomes active. If automated systems and trained reviewers determine that a conversation may indicate a serious safety risk, ChatGPT can send a limited notification by email, text message, or inapp alert. OpenAI says the message does not include chat transcripts or detailed content, and users can change or remove the contact at any time.
