Quebec's construction holiday began with a deadly weekend on the province's roads, with at least six people killed in three separate highway crashes and two more deaths reported on municipal roads.
The fatal collisions happened in several parts of Quebec, including Lantier in the Laurentians, the North Shore near Tadoussac, and near Quebec City. Police also reported a pedestrian death in Montreal and a separate crash in Sherbrooke that killed a 68yearold man.
The SAAQ, Quebec's auto insurance board, said the construction holiday is one of the most dangerous periods of the year because of heavier traffic and risky driving behaviours such as speeding and impaired driving. The annual holiday, which runs until August 1, is taken by many construction workers and other Quebec residents during the last two weeks of July.
