A Quebec court has found Alexandre Garcès guilty of attempted murder and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a stabbing at the Longueuil courthouse in January 2024.
The judge said Garcès had longstanding mental health conditions, including Tourette syndrome, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and autism, but ruled that he remained criminally responsible because he understood his actions were wrong.
Court records said Garcès stabbed court interpreter Hai Thach several times on Jan. 9, 2024. The judge concluded the attack appeared to be motivated by revenge against society, and the victim was believed to have been chosen at random. Garcès's family attended the verdict hearing.
