Coast Guard jet carrying DHS secretary makes emergency landing after engine failure
Coast Guard emergency landing after one-engine failure near Washington, D.C. See how the crew handled the incident and why aircraft age is back in focus
A U.S. Coast Guard aircraft carrying Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin made an emergency landing Wednesday after losing an engine while traveling from Georgia to Washington, D.C.
According to air traffic audio, the pilot declared an emergency after the jet lost its right engine and requested an immediate landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia. The aircraft had 14 people on board and enough fuel for about 2.5 hours, officials said.
Mullin said on X that the crew handled the situation calmly and professionally, and that the singleengine landing went smoothly. The incident also renewed attention on concerns about the age of some Coast Guard aircraft, which DHS has previously said were well past their intended service life.
