Peel Public Health confirms first human West Nile case of 2026
West Nile virus in Peel: first human case confirmed as mosquitoes remain active See symptoms, local risks, and simple steps to protect your family this fall
Peel Public Health has confirmed the region's first human case of West Nile virus for 2026. Health officials said the case serves as a reminder that mosquitoes carrying the virus are still active in the community.
The agency said it first detected mosquitoes positive for West Nile in late July, and Toronto reported its first human case of the year on July 30. Most infections do not cause symptoms, but the virus can lead to fever, headache, body aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or a rash, and in rare cases more serious illness.
Peel Public Health is urging residents in Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon to keep taking precautions through the fall. Officials recommend using approved insect repellent, wearing long lightcoloured clothing, avoiding mosquito bites at dusk and dawn, and removing standing water around homes.
