Cowan shines for Maple Leafs after Calder Cup run

Easton Cowan sparks Maple Leafs with a goal and assist in a 2-1 win See how his AHL playoff run is fueling a bigger role in Toronto

TORONTO — Easton Cowan made an immediate impact for the Toronto Maple Leafs, setting up the opening goal and scoring the winner in a 21 victory over the New York Islanders. The 21yearold winger has carried confidence from a strong run with the Toronto Marlies, who won the Calder Cup in June. After a rookie NHL season that included time as a healthy scratch, Cowan said playing playoff hockey in the AHL helped him settle into a better rhythm heading into this year. Maple Leafs teammates and coach Jim Hiller said Cowan has looked more poised and mature, with improved defensive play and a larger role on the penalty kill. Toronto has also used him on the third line alongside newcomers Nick Paul and Colton Sissons as the team adjusts its roster.
